Open Mic Night: Talent Showcases, TV Talent Search, and Talent Competitions; Agents & Casting Directors to Contact

An Actor's Mouth

The talent showcase represents an opportunity for an aspiring artist to go onto a stage with a live audience before them, perform acts or works in progress, and gain instant feedback, and perhaps win a regular booking at the particular venue. Designated musical venues will host an "open jam" session for musicians and singers, and alternative performance spaces will host poetry jams. But comics doing brief skits and tap dancers have been known to join these sessions also. Some venues have a very strict policy whereby performers are required to bring or sell tickets to a certain number of paying guests in order for them to get their turn on stage. And then there are establishments, piano bars in particular, that although they do not have a formalized open mic segment, will invite willing participants from the audience up to sing a song or two. You can view a directory (which is always be updated) of showcase venues with an open mic policy further down this page.

Aside from Reality TV, television studios are known to host searches of various kinds to scour for undiscovered professional talent and fresh faces. Seasoned performers seeking additional options beyond talent search opportunities should check the section on frequently arising audition opportunities located on a different page. Beyond trying out new material before a live audience, talent showcases and open mic nights are suited for inviting an agent, the press or a business manager up to see you perform. An effort has been made to list talent showcases, regardless of their location, but emphasis has been placed on NYC with its numerous outlets for entertainment and media production facilities. If you feel there is a noteworthy addition to add to this page that is a genuine showcase for artists and performers seeking more exposure please use the Contact Us form to let us know about your suggestion.

Agents and Casting Directors That Attend Showcases and Host Open Calls

From our observations, it seems like there are more opportunities to have an agent or casting director attend a showcase than there are for "open call" opportunities. Furthermore, it seems that casting directors and producers are more likely to attend showcases than agents. Although any agent or casting director can set up an open call for a particular occasion, you will find listed on this page agents and casting directors that do so on a consistent basis. Remember, to improve your chances for audition success, follow the protocol and instructions of these agents and casting directors on when and how to contact them. The general rule is no phone calls and no visits. Be professional, don't be desperate. Failure to do so could result in their non-response to you and no consideration for their productions. Use the contact information you find here only to inquire as to what the appropriate contact protocol is and not to promote yourself. Although agents and casting directors may attend showcases, they may not directly accept showcase invitations from soliciting artists. Be certain to clarify the submission policy. Some may have a policy of accepting invites through industry referral only. It is wise to check any agency thoroughly before you decide to associate yourself with one. Keep in mind that casting directors make their money from a client that they place you with. Use caution if any organization attempts to directly charge you a fee to be represented.
