Going Global: Finding Performing Opportunities on the International Stage

This section will survey and help guide its readers to select links providing informed access to organizations whose mission is to administrate international arts exchange, international arts policy resources, international arts funding sources, international arts news and information, international arts travel issues. Following is an excerpt from the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) -- the membership organization that unites, represents and serves the United States’ state and jurisdictional arts agencies -- website at http://www.nasaa-arts.org/artworks/checklist.html, highlighting in the eyes of its author some of the more essential aspects to be aware of when planning arts and cultural projects of an international scope :

The series of questions or suggestions below can be adapted for use by state arts agencies, arts organizations or individual artists looking at the prospect of working internationally.

1. Know why you want to work abroad and why in a specific country or region now. Ask yourself:

• Why is it important to my organization's mission to work in a particular country, or a particular part of the world?
• How is the interest in international programming related to my organization's programs in the immediate future?
• What effect might my international work potentially have on my organization, my partners and the partnering country?

2. Explore local resources on the country or culture in which you have an interest. Check on and/or contact:

• cultural associations of immigrant groups
• faculty and course offerings or public lecture series at local colleges or universities
• language and area studies departments at local colleges and universities
• programs of private or government cultural organizations such as the Goethe Institute, the Mexican Cultural Institute, the Japan Society, etc.
• the country's cultural affairs officer at its embassy in Washington, DC, or at a consulate, if there is one in my city
• local and state arts agencies to see if they have programs with specific countries
• local and state governments, economic development offices, and the Department of Commerce to see if the mayor and governor have special trade or commerce initiatives with specific countries or regions
• Sister Cities or Partners of the Americas programs
• other artists or community members who have lived in or traveled extensively in the country
• organizations abroad such as binational centers, embassy cultural affairs offices, universities or other institutions that can be identified on the Internet

3. Research cultural values and sensitivities in the country or region in which you wish to work. Investigate:

How do people in the society function with respect to time and space?

What does distance mean to them?

What are the common methods of communication both person-to person and city-to-city?

How do people get their information about the rest of the world?

What are historical perspectives on current social and political issues?

What religions are practiced, and what role does religion play in peoples' lives?

Are there accepted gender roles, and how may they affect work and living style?

Are there ethnic tensions to be aware of that may affect cultural interaction?

How will I be perceived as an American, and what depth of understanding can I, as an American, expect to gain from this experience?

How will language differences be addressed?

What customs and traditions are important in relation to food and eating?

How available are telephone, fax or e-mail?

Are there local transportation issues that must be addressed?
